Huawei Secures WCDMA/HSPA Network Contract from Viettel

Chinese telecommunications equipment supplier Huawei recently announced that the company has signed a cooperation agreement with Vietnamese telecom operator Viettel, whereby Huawei will deploy a WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) / HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) network for the latter, the Sohu IT News reported on May 27.

Pursuant to the agreement, Huawei will establish more than 2,000 base stations, helping Viettel deploy its 3G network in the developed regions of southern Vietnam, covering the capital Ho Chi Minh City. Meanwhile, Viettel stated that it will start large-scale deployment of its 3G network in 2009. Huawei has obtained nearly half of the network contract, and it is reported that Ericsson winning a majority share of the remaining contract. Further details regarding the value of the deal were not yet disclosed.
